The concern behind the term is that an abrupt, unexplained jump in links looks unlike organic growth and may invite scrutiny. That intuition is reasonable, but the widely repeated advice to keep growth 'natural and gradual' has no published figure behind it, and treating it as a hard rule leads people to throttle legitimate work.

In reality, sharp spikes happen constantly for entirely honest reasons: a launch, a piece of research that circulates, an acquisition, a news cycle. Search engines see those patterns all day. What distinguishes a suspicious spike is not its size but its composition — a hundred links from unrelated low-quality sites with identical anchors is a different object from a hundred links following a widely covered announcement.

The useful takeaway is to stop optimizing the rate and look at what is arriving. If the links are relevant and editorially chosen, velocity is a metric you are describing rather than a limit you are approaching.
